Poulter - I am Tiger’s main threat

January 30th, 2008

Ian Poulter is set to infuriate his rival professionals after claiming he is the only one capable of challenging world number one Tiger Woods.
The world number 22 made his comments in the March edition of Golf World.

“The trouble is I don’t rate anyone else,” said the extrovert Englishman. “Don’t get me wrong, I respect everyone who is a professional.

“But the problem is I haven’t played to my full potential yet. And when that happens it will just be me and Tiger.”

Woods has 13 majors and 85 career titles to his name, while Poulter has won seven tournaments.

The 32-year-old Poulter, when asked for his predictions on who would win the Masters in April, replied: “Put Tiger down for that one”.

For the year’s second major at the US Open, he said: “You can put me down for that one”.

Poulter, pictured nude in the magazine with only a golf bag guarding his modesty, admitted he was nowhere near challenging Woods yet.

“Tiger is one in a million,” he said. “Actually Tiger is one in 10 million.

“He is extraordinary. If you look at the rankings he is almost two-and-a-half times better than the guy in second place (Phil Mickelson).”

Poulter, a member of Europe’s victorious 2004 Ryder Cup team at Oakland Hills, is known for his colourful dress sense and his strident opinions.

“I do speak my mind,” he told the magazine. “I am pretty honest with what I say.”

But his comments are sure to see him ridiculed by some of his counterparts on the golf circuit.

Poulter and Woods will both be competing at the Dubai Desert Classic, which starts on Thursday.

And reports suggest the Briton’s fellow professionals may all give each other a prearranged signal on the driving range and disappear, leaving just Poulter and Woods practising.

Woods said on Wednesday that he never imagined he would have won so many majors at this stage of his career.

“When I first turned pro could I ever have foreseen this happening this soon in my career? No, certainly not. Not having 13 majors by the time I’m 32,” he said.

“I wouldn’t have foreseen getting to that point because at the time my game wasn’t good enough. I had not matured and had not understood how to play the game.

“Over the years understanding how to manage my game around the course and getting the most out of it every day, that takes experience.

“When I first turned pro there is no way I could ever have foreseen that. I didn’t have that experience. I didn’t have that knowledge to get around the course.”

And he admitted to having self doubts from time to time.

“Of course they do,” he said. “That’s part of the game of golf and part of life.

“You have those doubts and the whole idea is to obviously keep pushing through and keep improving and have a game plan to execute.”

Target World Challenge in California - Woods in the lead

December 15th, 2007

Tiger Woods fired a course record of 10-under 62 to take a four-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Target World Challenge in California. The world number one hit eight birdies and an eagle in his quest for his eighth tournament victory of the year.

“I am very pleased with the way I hit the ball,” said Woods.

Overnight leader Jim Furyk carded a round of 67 to stay in the hunt, while Padraig Harrington hit the same score to go fourth behind Zach Johnson.

Woods’s round at the Sherwood Country Club was his best score since his 61 at the 2005 Buick Open.

He improved the previous record of 63 set by Harrington in 2002 and equalled only by David Love and Michael Campbell.

Birdies on the second, fifth and sixth holes saw the three-time champion take the outright lead from fellow American Furyk.

Woods nearly holed out at the sixth, but his tee shot hit the front of the cup and then spun back to within six inches.

He followed that up with a beautiful approach shot to within six feet of the pin on the ninth.

He saved his best for the back nine, starting with a 20-foot putt for an eagle three on the 11th, soon followed by further birdies at the 12th and 13th.

He collected his seventh birdie of the day with a brilliant 30-foot on the 17th before signing off with yet another on the 18th.

“I hit some good shots but I made some bombs out there,” said Woods, who carded a double bogey on the 18th on Thursday.

“The only difference today was I made some good putts. I didn’t throw away a good round like yesterday.”

Birdies on the last two holes ensured Furyk was within reasonable range of Woods at nine under, while Johnson, who birdied the last three holes for a 67, is another shot behind.

Colin Montgomerie made a vast improvement on his disastrous first round of 80, carding a 67, but is in penultimate place on three over.

Resounding ‘Yes’ vote for PGA And PGA Tour merger

December 6th, 2007

The PGA of Australia and PGA Tour of Australasia members have now both overwhelmingly supported the proposed merger of the two organizations it was announced today.
“This is an exciting time for Australian golf in general” said Peter Senior, the incoming Chairman of the merged organisation. “It will ensure that professional golf, in particular, is more co-ordinated at all levels here in Australia and the merger will also support our international links with other PGA’s and PGA Tours around the world.”
PGA Tour members yesterday strongly supported the merger at a specially convened meeting as part of the legal process. This followed the PGA of Australia vote a week earlier when nearly 98 percent of PGA member’s who voted, supported the merger. Both member votes were considerably higher than the minimum 50 percent required to approve the merger.
“The overwhelming support of members from both organisations is gratifying and demonstrates clear commitment to the new organisation. It’s been a work in progress for a long time and its fulfilling to see it come to fruition,” said Max Garske, Chief Executive Officer of the PGA of Australia, who will be the CEO of the new organisation. Free U.S. Masters admission for youngsters from ‘08

December 6th, 2007

Youngsters aged between eight and 16 will be given free admission to next year’s U.S. Masters if accompanied by an accredited patron.
“We want to inspire the next generation of golfers,” Augusta National Golf Club chairman Billy Payne said in a statement on Thursday. “We’re serious about exposing youngsters to golf and the Masters.”
Tickets to the Masters are among the most cherished in sport and exposing youth to the first major of the year is part of a new global strategy announced by tournament organizers in October.
Payne also said the popular par-three contest, traditionally held on the eve of the Masters, would be televised for the first time next year by ESPN to reach a wider, younger audience.
“These initiatives are important first steps and a great kickoff to our ongoing mission of growing the game,” he said.
“The par-three contest is fun and exciting for the entire family. It’s an event everyone enjoys and we think it will demonstrate to kids just how fun golf can be.”
The par-three tournament, first held in 1960, is played over a nine-hole, par-27 layout. There have been 63 aces since its first edition. Read the rest of this entry »

Trump’s £1bn golf plan rejected

November 29th, 2007

Donald Trump is considering an appeal after his plans to create a £1bn golf resort were rejected by councillors. The US billionaire, who wants to build a golf complex and housing development at the Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire, said he was surprised by the decision.

The controversial project was given outline planning approval last week, but then went to Aberdeenshire Council’s infrastructure committee.

It rejected the plans on the chairman’s casting vote after a tied vote.

A spokeswoman for Mr Trump told BBC Scotland: “We are surprised by the decision, it would have been a great development.

“We are considering an appeal, and also considering doing something very spectacular in another location. Sadly, it will not be in Scotland.”

Earlier, the Trump Organisation’s head of international development, George Sorial, said after more than two-and-a-half hours of debate: “Obviously we are very disappointed.

“It is our position that the council has failed to adequately represent the voice and opinion of the people of Aberdeen and the Shire who are ultimately the losers here.”

‘Too high’

Mr Sorial said that they were “not sure” if they would appeal against the decision.

“I think we have been very frank all along - we do have options elsewhere in the UK and we will sit down now and look at that,” he said.

“We haven’t made a formal decision yet.”

Opposition to the scheme has included environmental groups, such as RSPB Scotland, and some local residents.

Protesters have claimed that the resort would have a major impact on wildlife and destroy a beautiful part of Scotland.

Bats handicaps golf course’s restoration

October 20th, 2007

A £100 million development at a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf resort has been delayed for months to protect a colony of rare bats.

A new hotel complex at the St Mellion Golf and Country Club near Liskeard, Cornwall, cannot go ahead until the brown long-eared bats are found a new home.

Developers who are trying to restore the resort to a championship course have called in bat experts to help them to sort out the problem.

St Mellion used to attract the world’s best golfers to the Benson and Hedges tournament at the start of the season but it was moved because of complaints by players.

A special bats’ dormitory may have to be built to lure them out of the old buildings that need to be redeveloped. The bats have already started hibernating and so cannot be disturbed until they wake up in February or March.
